Before You Drive Off: A Renter's Pre-Trip Vehicle Checklist
A few minutes at pickup can save you a headache later. Here's what to check and photograph before you drive off in a self-drive rental.

Most rentals go fine without any of this ever mattering. But the few minutes it takes at pickup are what protect you if a dispute ever comes up about a scratch or a charge you didn't expect — and it protects the owner just as much, since it rules out anything that happened before you took the vehicle.
Walk around the vehicle before you agree anything's fine
Look at all four sides, not just the ones near you when you park — existing dents, scratches, and tyre condition are the main things worth a proper look. If something's there, point it out to the owner before you drive off, not after you bring it back.
Photograph everything — this protects you, not just the owner
A few timestamped photos take a minute: all four exterior sides, the odometer reading, the fuel gauge, and close-ups of anything that's already damaged. This is the single most useful thing on this list — it's the difference between "I have proof" and "it's my word against theirs" if a disagreement comes up later.
Confirm the basics out loud, not just by assumption
Fuel return policy, the deposit amount, and who to contact if something happens on the road — these are worth actually saying out loud and agreeing on with the owner at handover, even if it feels obvious. A two-minute conversation avoids most misunderstandings before they start.
Check the paperwork is actually in the vehicle
RC copy, insurance, and PUC should be in the vehicle before you leave — not something you assume is there. It takes ten seconds to check the glovebox, and you don't want to find out it's missing if you're stopped somewhere along the way.
Test the essentials before you're on the highway
Lights, indicators, horn, and mirrors for any vehicle; for a car, confirm there's a spare tyre; for a bike, check the brakes respond the way you'd expect. Better to catch something in the first five minutes near the owner than an hour into your trip.
