Chandigarh to Amritsar by Self-Drive Car: The Complete Day-Trip Guide
Planning a day trip to Amritsar from Chandigarh, Mohali, or Panchkula? Here's the route, drive time, and what to see — with a self-drive rental in mind.

Amritsar is one of the most common weekend or long-day trips from the Tricity — close enough to do in a single day if you leave early, and there's a self-drive car in it more often than not, since it's a highway drive rather than city hopping.
The route and how long it actually takes
The drive runs via NH1 through Jalandhar, covering roughly 230 km one way — figure on about 4.5 to 5 hours depending on traffic around Jalandhar and Ludhiana, longer if you're leaving during peak morning hours. Leaving by 6–6:30 AM gets you into Amritsar with a full day ahead of you rather than losing the morning to the drive.
This is a car trip, not a bike trip
At this distance, on a highway, for several hours each way, a car is the right call — weather protection and being able to actually rest during the return drive matter more here than they do for a short city hop. If you haven't already, our car vs bike comparison covers this trade-off in more detail.
What to see if you're doing it as a single day
The Golden Temple is the obvious anchor and worth arriving at early, before the crowds and the heat build up. Jallianwala Bagh is a short walk from there and worth 30–45 minutes. The Partition Museum, near the Town Hall, is close by too and worth the time if history interests you. The Wagah Border retreat ceremony happens only in the evening and adds a couple of hours plus a drive out and back from the city centre — doable, but it pushes a same-day return well into the night, so it's really a call on how much of a hurry you're in to get home.
Parking and getting around once you're there
There's a dedicated parking complex near the Golden Temple that's the easiest option for a self-drive visitor — walk in from there rather than trying to find street parking closer to the entrance. The old city area around the temple is best covered on foot once you're parked; it isn't really built for driving through.
Best time of year to go
Winter (November through February) is the most comfortable stretch for a day trip — summer heat makes the walking-heavy parts of the day rough, and the drive itself is more tiring in peak heat. Monsoon season is fine but plan around the weather forecast, since heavy rain on NH1 slows the drive noticeably.
