First-Time Self-Drive Renter? Here's Your Pre-Booking Checklist

Most bad self-drive rental experiences trace back to something that could've been confirmed in a two-minute chat message before pickup. Here's the checklist worth running through every time, especially the first time.

Before you message the owner

Confirm your own licence is verified and approved — not just submitted — since an unapproved account usually can't complete a booking. Decide on vehicle type based on the actual trip, not just price: a hatchback is fine for city errands, but a longer or hill route is where the extra cost of an SUV starts paying for itself in comfort and stability.

When you message the owner

Confirm the vehicle is actually available for your exact dates — listings can go stale faster than you'd expect. Ask the security deposit amount outright, in writing, rather than assuming it matches the listing price. Ask about fuel policy (full-to-full is the most common arrangement, but confirm it) and whether there's a daily mileage cap. If your trip is a hill route or long-distance, ask directly whether the vehicle is comfortable for it — not every city runabout is.

Watch for the response window

At pickup — the part people skip

Walk around the vehicle with the owner present. Photograph the exterior from all four sides, the interior, and the odometer reading. Note the fuel level in writing (a quick photo of the gauge works). At return

Return at the agreed time and fuel level. Do a final walk-around together before you hand back the keys, and settle the deposit on the spot rather than leaving it for "later."
